Transcript of Paul’s Video

Hi, I I’m Paul Staley, San Diego family lawyer. I’m here to talk to you about custody and visitation in San Diego family courts. There’s a lot that you need to know if you’ve got a dispute about custody and visitation in the San Diego family court. One of the first things is that when you have a dispute, mediation is going to be mandatory. It’s required statewide. And mediation in San Diego County is probably the single most important event in your custody dispute. It’s important that you be really well prepared. It’s also important that you understand what the mediator thinks is important. And what each judge thinks. And each judge subscribes to maybe a different school of thought, so it’s important to be talking to an attorney who understands what each of these judges think. Now, when you go into mediation you’ll have an opportunity to talk to the mediator, to answer questions, and there are certain rules of of conduct during remediation that you’re going to need to understand. That’s one reason why you’ll want some help getting prepared. It may come as a surprise, in fact it will come as a surprise that a lot of the things that are important to the mediator and to the judge will be counter-intuitive really. So that’s another reason why you’ve got to get well educated on how to conduct yourself in mediation. Maybe the last reason for you to know how important mediation is – is that the mediator is going to make recommendations to the judge, that is unless you and the other parent reach complete agreement about what should happen in the custody and visitation dispute. The judges tend to rely fairly heavily upon these recommendations, so it’s very important for you to know how to get the best possible recommendation for the outcome that you’re looking for. I look forward to talking to you. Thank you.
